Recently, Researcher Jin Haiyan, Senior Engineer Han Xibin, and jointly trained doctoral student Jiang Peiwen from the SIO successfully completed a China-Russia joint marine scientific expedition.
The expedition was organized by the Institute of Pacific Oceanography, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and lasted for 33 days. Our researchers, in collaboration with Russian counterparts, conducted a comprehensive survey into the ecological evolution and responses of the river-estuary-coastal continuum under the combined pressures of global change and human activities. The survey focused on Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan and nearshore areas of the Okhotsk Sea. They completed the collection and investigation of water environment samples at 152 stations and sediment gravity cores at 5 stations, obtaining first-hand survey data and samples.
The Institute of Pacific Oceanography is the largest and most comprehensive marine scientific research institution in Russian Far East. The SIO has been collaborating with it since 2016 and signed a memorandum of cooperation in April 2025. The successful implementation of this joint expedition marks a significant step in substantive cooperation of both sides. Through in-depth exchanges on research concepts, methodological frameworks, and cooperation mechanisms, it has laid a foundation for the continuous development of future cooperation.
